Bans or Bacteria?

San Francisco made headlines last year by banning plastic bags, and cities across the US and the world are taking similar steps. But 16-year-old Canadian high school student Daniel Burd has approached the problem quite differently- by finding microbes that can make plastic decompose. See the full story here.

Burd's discovery has yet to be tested on a larger scale, but what's important (and encouraging) is his approach- turning to innovation rather than regulation to solve environmental problems.
